“Throughout the ages, the shaman, the witch doctor, the court jester, is the drag. It represents the duality of the material world and the fact that this is all illusion, it’s not to be taken seriously…so it’s political. It’s political on the most fundamental level.” @RuPaulOfficial

Der Eigene ("The Unique"), mentioned in the first episode, was the first known gay journal in the world. Published by Adolf Brand from 1896-1932, until Hitler's rise to power. Brand's home was searched in '33 and the materials used to produce the publication were given to Nazi officer Ernst Röhm, a gay SA ally of Hitler, until the dictator saw to Röhm's execution during the Night of Long Knives. (Röhm is also mentioned in episode 1.)

No copies of Henry Gerber's "Friendship and Freedom" publication are known to still exist. This photo of queer publications taken by German Jewish sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld shows one of Gerber's two issues, as well as Der Eigene, both discussed in episode 1. Hirschfeld is also covered. (You can also see him and his institute depicted in season 2 of @transparentamazon.)

Henry Gerber's house is now a Chicago Landmark. The 1885 Queen Anne-style house at 1710 N. Crilly Court was designated a landmark in 2001. This is where police raided Henry's bedroom, arrested him with a Hearst reporter present, and ultimately had the first American gay emancipation organization shut down. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service in 2015.

The book is by the fabulous Jim Elledge, who wrote ✨The Boys of Fairy Town ✨ which was one of my favorite reads while working on the podcast. I’m so happy he’s telling Gerber’s full story!
