Season 1 Recap

You don’t have to hear season 1 to join us for season 2, but in case you wanna brush up…!

Season 2 picks up in 1954, right where we left off. A secret organization of lesbians forms as the national Mattachine Society crumbles. A political revolution is launched by a drag queen. Police raid gay spaces and street queens fight back. The masks come off and a militant minority is rising.

The true story of American LGBTQ+ liberation from the beginning to Stonewall.

So thrilled to be featured in today’s Chicago Tribune!
The Chicago Examiner’s headline for Henry Gerber’s 1924 arrest in the building behind @devlyncamp was “STRANGE SEX CULT EXPOSED.” It’s because of his work and the Mattachine’s, and many more people following them, that we can be so lucky to be featured in the Trib in a positive light.

Untitled AIDS Piece 1, variable edition screen prints, 2018

Each folder contains redacted files screen printed on variable substrates (gelatin silver prints, notebook paper, fine art paper, fabrics) in a four run edition.

While I was busy working on the entire process of developing GLORIA I was also experimenting with screen printing and developing this project. After listening to the wonderful
@mattachinefiles podcast I was inspired to create a body of work that focused on the erasure of queer people from history and what this means for contemporary visibility. I spent days searching through redacted FBI and CIA files and carefully chose some (and crafted my own) that commented on these issues. Over the next few days I’ll be sharing pieces from this project.

SF research trip!

JUNE 18, 2018

If you’re in SF, take a quiet walk through the AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park. The rocks, benches, and sidewalks are etched with names of those we lost in the epidemic. It’s astounding to see a fraction of the people lost covering every stone through a large portion of the park.

Mattachine President Dick Leitsch in the organization’s newsletter following Stonewall:
“Those usually put down as ‘sissies’ or ‘swishes’ showed the most courage and sense during the action. Their bravery and daring saved many people from being hurt.”

JUNE 23, 2018

We’ll cover the 1966 “Sip-In” on the podcast eventually (it’s a serialized story, after all) but for today we take some time to read the many memories shared online of Mattachine President Dick Leitsch (1965-69) who passed away yesterday. His contributions to the movement were huge and won’t be forgotten. We can enjoy Pride in our bars because of him.

I am absolutely honored to let you queers know that Mattachine has received a beautiful donation from The Fellowship of the Phoenix, a Queer neopagan tradition and non-profit organization serving the unique needs of our LGBTQ community, specifically from their group in Chicago.

Thank you so much for supporting another local queer out here spreading the gay gospel. More info about them and their meetings is available at fellowshipofthephoenix.org!

“We seek to encourage and reclaim Queer power, healing, and spirit for the individual and the community at large. We offer spiritual guidance to the modern needs of those we serve. We work to unite the ancient and the modern in a structure that honors the diverse membership of our community as we walk this labyrinth together.”

FEBRUARY 28, 2019

“By December 1954, Kennelly seemed so weak that the machine ousted him from the ballot, slating Richard J. Daley to run as the machine’s candidate... Indeed, the Chicago Tribune had long taunted Kennelly for his failure to marry, and his opponent exploited the opening.”
From QUEER CLOUT by Timothy Stewart-Winter.
Another season 2 source! Oh, the not-so-subtle homophobia.

Last Tuesday night, campaigning on a platform of “leaving the crumbling machine in the past,” Lori Lightfoot became the first openly LGBTQ candidate for Chicago mayor. Bill Daley conceded — before the race was called for two women of color.

“Daughters of Bilitis was a vague enough name, they agreed, that if asked about it, members could claim to belong to something as benign as a women’s lodge or a Greek poetry club. Only the enlightened or those already ‘in the life’ would know about Louys’s invention of Bilitis, a mythical female who seduced the celebrated Sappho... It was to be the first—and only—unanimous decision the four founding couples would make.”

‘WHAT IS CAMPING?’ ✨
What an honor to look through Rudi Gernreich’s 1951 Mattachine notebook yesterday, covering some of the earliest known discussions between gays in which they try to figure out what camp behavior is and what purpose it serves in the queer community ‼️
Rudi was Harry Hay’s boyfriend and first recruit into the Mattachine (“It’s the most dangerous thing I’ve ever seen and I’m with you 100%.”)
He went on to become an avante-garde fashion designer of unisex clothing and inventor of the topless bikini.

Spending the quarantine editing the now-delayed second season, as I have no idea when some of the remaining voice actors will be able to record safely. Was planning to begin April Fools Day.
