"The Raid on California Hall: After the Ball"

“Angry Ministers Rip Police”

We pick up where the previous episode left off, the morning after the raid. Nancy May returns to work, waiting to be fired. Homophiles prepare for the worst as every major paper covers the raid. The ministers take the police to court, turning San Francisco in a surprising new direction.

Reverend Cecil Williams, featured in the California Hall raid episodes, joined GLIDE Memorial in 1963, welcoming “the diverse community of hippies, prostitutes, chronic drug users, transgender youth, and other poor and the marginalized people of the Tenderloin.” He invited people like Angela Davis and Black Panthers to speak at the church, grew the membership to 10,000 people, provided HIV/AIDS care, and ran a meals program feeding unhoused people 3 times a day. He retired at 70 and he’s now 91 and lives in Texas. ☀️
